A MOVING POINT OF LIGHT
This wooden octagonal lighthouse was built in 1869 to provide guidance to the many ships navigating at sea. The bright light at the top of the lighthouse, called a beacon, was used as a reference point by navigators. To assist with navigation, the lighthouse worked in conjunction with a weaker range light mounted on the Allen Hotel located a kilometer away. Mariners would determine whether they had rounded the Cape by comparing the locations of the range light in relation to the beacon.
The Bent family spent four generations as lighthouse keepers. They had the important task to ensure that the beacon would remain lit during dark hours. Lighthouse keepers lived on premises and worked 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. With the construction of the confederation bridge in 1997 and the discontinuation of the Ferry service, the lighthouse became obsolete. The last day of the lighthouse operation was the day before the bridge opened. Although the Cape Jourimain lighthouse is no longer functional, it is historically important, and was designated in 2015 under the Heritage Lighthouse Protection Act. Coastal erosion on the island results in an average loss of 0.3 to 0.9 metres (1 to 3 feet) of coastline every year. Consequently, the lighthouse was moved back from the eroding shoreline several times.

Un faisceau de lumière
Le phare du cap Jourimain est un bâtiment de bois de forme octogonale construit en 1869 pour guider les nombreux bateaux naviguant dans le détroit de Northumberland. La lumière intense émise au sommet du phare servait de point de repère pour les navigateurs. Le phare était utilisé de concert avec un feu d’alignement, émettant une lumière moins intense, installé sur le toit de l’hôtel Allen, situé à une distance d’un kilomètre. Ainsi, les navigateurs pouvaient déterminer s’ils avaient passé le cap en comparant la position du feu d’alignement avec celle du phare.
La famille Bent a gardé le phare pendant quatre générations. Elle avait l’importante tâche de s’assurer que le phare restait allumé durant les heures d’obscurité. Les gardiens du phare vivaient sur place et travaillaient 24 heures sur 24, sept jours par semaine. En raison de la construction du pont de la Confédération en 1997 et de l’abandon du service de traversier, le phare est devenu obsolète. Il a été utilisé pour la dernière fois la journée précédant l’ouverture du pont. Bien que le phare du cap Jourimain ne fonctionne plus, il a une importance historique et a donc été désigné phare patrimonial en vertu de la Loi sur la protection des phares patrimoniaux en 2015. Comme l’érosion côtière fait reculer la côte de l’île Jourimain de 0,3 à 0,9 mètre (1 à 3 pieds) chaque année, on a dû déplacer le phare à plusieurs reprises.
