The Swamp Fox geoart is placed in the Francis Marion National Forest with permission of the Forest Ranger. The forest is an active hunting area during certain times of the year, please be respectful of hunters and be safe. There may be critters near caches, be mindful of your surroundings and watch your step. All caches are placed close to the roads, some of the roads may have pot holes and ruts at times.

Early service
On June 21, 1775, Francis Marion was commissioned captain in the 2nd South Carolina Regiment under William Moultrie, with whom he served in June 1776 in the defense of Fort Sullivan (today known as Fort Moultrie), in Charleston harbor.
In September 1776, the Continental Congress commissioned Marion as a lieutenant colonel. In the autumn of 1779, he took part in the siege of Savannah, a failed Franco-American attempt to capture and recover the Georgia colonial capital city which had been previously taken by the British.
