Geocache Description:

The Swamp Fox geoart is placed in the Francis Marion National Forest with permission of the Forest Ranger. The forest is an active hunting area during certain times of the year, please be respectful of hunters and be safe. There may be critters near caches, be mindful of your surroundings and watch your step. All caches are placed close to the roads, some of the roads may have pot holes and ruts at times.

Francis Marion rarely committed his men to frontal warfare, but repeatedly surprised larger bodies of Loyalists or British regulars with quick surprise attacks and equally quick withdrawal from the field. After the surrender of Charleston, the British garrisoned South Carolina with help from local Tories, except for Williamsburg (the present Pee Dee), which they were never able to hold. The British made one attempt to garrison Williamsburg at the colonial village of Willtown, but were driven out by Marion at the Battle of Black Mingo.
