Pluto was discovered on February 18, 1930. Venetia Burney, an 11-year old school girl in England, suggested the name. Pluto is the Roman counterpart to the Greek god of the underworld, Hades. Its moons are Charon, Hydra, Nix, Styx, and Kerberos. Charon was discovered in 1978.
In 2005, Mike Brown of Caltech discovered Eris, a remote icy world the size of Pluto. This indicated that Pluto was just one of many worlds in the Kuiper Belt. Pluto was reclassified as a dwarf planet.
But this doesn't mean there are only eight planets in our solar system. Astronomers think there is a Planet 9 about the size of Neptune that orbits the sun every 15,000 years in an elliptical orbit. Its closest approach to the sun is 200 times further than earth and it could go as far as 600 to 1200 times further than earth at its furthest point. As of the publishing of this cache, the existence of Planet 9 has not been proven.
