As a avid railfan in the area, one of the most interesting places in this area is the Hoosac Tunnel. As we know, the Hoosac Tunnel was built to move rail traffic from points West to East and East to West. This area brings you to the Central Shaft area, which is in the middle of the Hoosac Tunnel. Yes, you are above the Hoosac Tunnel, which is about 1020 feet below you. The purpose is to remove fumes from the "engines" that go through the tunnel. Keep in mind, during construction, it was also used to help "speed" up construction by offering an addition two ways in or out. During construction, in 1867, when the shaft was only about 580 feet down, thirteen workers died when a worker tinkered with a "gasometer lamp". This caused a spark and set the shaft fumes on fire. About three hundred sharp tools fell on the miners, the hoist fell on top of them and then the building itself. It took about a year to resume the project. This is only brief information on this project. This is one of the most amazing places in the area to learn about, respect and understand that this was a project that was ahead of its time, so to speak. Please note, there is no trespassing whatsoever at the Central Shaft location. It is posted. There is nothing to get out to do, for this cache, at the Central Shaft location.
