Agli inizi del Duecento, per proteggere il nucleo della Rocca Vecchia, il Comune si dotò di una prima Cinta muraria di estensione mirore rispetto a quella odierna. Alla fine del secolo, il circuito difensivo arrivava già a comprendere anche l'abitato di Torre Rotta, dove venne edificato un cassero, ricostruito succesivamente nella seconda metà del Trecento dal legato pontificio Egidio Albornoz. Nel XV seccolo Francesco Sforza forni la città di un nuovo circuito murario con porte e torrioni e, nonostante gli interventi postumi, l'assetto originario resta pressoché inalterato.
All'interno della Porta di San Pietro (Porta del Forno), opera anch'essa di maestranze lombarde, si trova una nicchia affrescata recentemente da Bruno d'Arcevia (1946) con Madonna e santi.

The town's first surrounding walls were built at the beginning of the 13th century, in order to protect the nucleus of the old fortress; by the end of the century, the defensive circuit also included the village of Torre Rotta, where a castle keep was built. In the 15th century, under the reign of Francesco Sforza, the city was equipped with new walls comprising gateways and towers that are still visible today.
St. Peter Gate ( Porta del Forno), also the work of Lombard masons, Houses a frescoed niche recentemente painted by Bruno d'Arcevia (1946), depicting the Madonna ans Saints.
