Geocache Description:


The Dawit Garedscha Georgian Orthodox monastery complex is located in the Kakheti region of Eastern Georgia. It was founded in the 6th century by Assyrian monks. Most of the earlier buildings were destroyed when the Mongol Army devastated the monastery in 1265. The monastery was rebuilt by the Georgian kings and served as an important institution of religious life in Georgia. After the Soviets took over Georgia in 1921, the monastery was closed down and used as a military training ground for the Soviet army. After the restoration of Georgia's independence in 1991, the monastery life in Dawit Garedscha was revived. Today the complex is on the list of candidates for the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage.

Most of the complex are located on Georgian territorry, but some parts are on Azerbaijan soil, as a result of Soviet politics. There is a border dispute between both countries around the monastery. The border is on the highest point of the ridge, but some buildings (including the chapel, where the meeting will take place) are on the Azerbaijanian side, but only accessible from Georgia.

The event will take place on the mountain ridge plateau (please refer to the trailhead waypoint) near a small chapel. The only way to access the ridge is a hiking trail starting near the monastery entrance. Its around 200m in altidude from the parking lot. So bring suitable shoes and plan enough time to get there. I guess it will take around an hour to walk there. We will meet at the given coordinates on the 31st of August 2018, starting at 11:30am till 12:00, maybe longer, because there should be a great view into Azerbaijan from the chapel.

I am really looking forward to meet other geocachers there and have a nice chat about our great hobby, and i also will bring a lot of trackables with me for trading or discovering.
