Collies originated in Scotland about 350 years ago, being mostly used for herding animals. Types are Border Collie, Rough Collie and Bearded Collie. They are gentle and affectionate dogs and one of the most intelligent dog breeds, making them really easy to train. They love being around people.
Famous Collie owners include Ronald Reagan, Elvis, Queen Alexandra, Queen Victoria and Tiger Woods. The most famous Rough Collie we all know is Lassie!
FUN FACTS:
The Scottish poet Robert Burns owned a Border Collie named Luath who he loved dearly. Luath's death inspired one of Burn's best poems, 'The Twa Dogs.'
A Border Collie named Chaser has been widely recognised as the world's most intelligent dog, she recognises the names of 1,000 objects!
The Border Collie ranks as Britain's 5th most popular dog, the Rough Collie at no. 70.
