These gentle dogs are the most commonly used breed for guide dogs. They love to swim. Thanks to their powerful noses, Labrador Retrievers have been trained to sniff out and identify early stages of cancer.
The Labrador was formerly known as the St John's Water Dog and was used as a sporting dog in Newfoundland, Canada in the early 1800s. The name Newfoundland was already taken as a dog breed so Labradors were named after the body of water in which they worked catching fish, the Labrador Sea.
Famous Labrador owners include Bill Clinton, Kevin Costner, Steve Martin, Hulk Hogan and Prince Charles.
FUN FACT:
In 1981, a black Labrador mix named Bosco won the election to be the honorary Mayor of Sunol, California, beating 2 human candidates for the job. He remained in this position until he died in 1994!
