Geocache Description:

As the name suggests, Spaniels originally come from Spain, bred as early as the 1400s as hunting dogs.  Originally one litter of Land Spaniels could yield both Cocker Spaniels and Springer Spaniels.  The smaller dogs were Cocker Spaniels and tasked with hunting down woodcock birds (hence the name Cocker).  Larger dogs were called Springers because of their ability to spring into bushes and scare birds out of hiding.  These two were considered different breeds in 1892 by the English Kennel Stud book.

From the 30s to the 50s, Cocker Spaniels were the most popular dogs in the country.  They make great therapy dogs because of their loving nature.

Famous Cocker Spaniel owners include George Clooney, Duchess Kate, David Beckham, Oprah Winfrey,
Presidents Truman and Nixon.

FUN FACTS:
The most famous Cocker Spaniel is Lady from 1955's Lady and the Tramp movie.  The breed's silky hair and prim disposition made the dog the natural choice for the elegant lead character.

Ginger the Cocker Spaniel took a Gaelic class with her owner and mastered basic commands in the language in only 3 weeks: the 4 year old pooch could suidh (sit) and fuirich (stay) like a native listener.

Although Elton John has owned many dogs throughout the years, Arthur the Cocker Spaniel seems to hold a special place in his heart.  Arthur has made red carpet appearances and served as 'best man/dog' at Sir Elton's wedding.

The Cocker Spaniel is Britain's 6th most popular dog breed.
