Geocache Description:

Please be aware this site is only available during opening hours for the Goulburn Historic Waterworks which are currently 10am-3pm on Sun, Mon and Tues.

Here on the entrance road to the Goulburn Historical Waterworks, on the banks of the Wollondilly River, is an impressive outcrop of Silurian sedimentary and volcanic rock. Silurian sediments were laid down in a band of time between 400 and 450 million years ago. An ice age had recently ended and sea levels rose globally. At the time, Australia was still part of Gondwanaland and was on the Equator, with a warmer climate and a lower average elevation than today. Water covered more of the continent than it does today and many sedimentary deposits were formed. Later, a series of uplifts brought these deposits to the surface and forced the ocean to recede.

To log this Earthcache you must visit the location and send me your answers to the following 3 questions:

1. Examine the large outcrop of layered rock on the opposite side of the road from the river. How many layers can you see? Choose from the following answers:

(a) three distinct layers
(b) seven distinct layers
(c) more layers than I can easily count

2. With your back to the river, are the layers:

(a) sloping upward from right to left
(b) sloping upward from left to right
(c) flat and almost level with the horizon

3. The outcrop can be roughly divided into two sections, with volcanic below and sedimentary above. What differences can you see in those two sections?

Photos are always welcome, but please no spoilers. You may post your Found log immediately without waiting for my response. If I don't receive correct answers within 7 days of your Found log being posted, I may delete your log. Please don't post spoilers in your log.
