The Wadi Rum is the biggest Wadi in Jordan. The awesome Landscape created 30 Million Years ago.
Geological turmoil created a huge rift that created the Jordan Trench, the Gulf of Aqaba and the Red Sea alongside Wadi Rum. By erosion, the red sandstone, standing on a pedestal of gray basalt or granite, was sanded to the now visible bizarre shapes. Outstanding are the rock bridges over the Jabal Burdah and the Jabal Kahraz, which are about 30 km north of the village Rum.
Due to the quite numerous water sources a nomadic settlement since the Stone Age was possible. The rainwater, which falls in winter, can penetrate through the porous sandstone, is stopped by the water-impermeable layer of granite and penetrates at various points again.
