This is a quick PnG to remind you of a piece of lost history.
Monroe Station was built in 1925, and served as a way point for people using US 41 to cross the Big Cypress Swamp, from Miami to Naples or the other way. It was used as a way station until 1949. During the early 1970's, when crossing Florida at the lower end of the state, it was the only place to get gas, a cup of coffee, a repair, or use a telephone in that area of the Big Cypress Swamp. The property was later used for many years, as a place to park and store Swamp Buggies.
On May 11, 2000, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. Since July 2007, it had been boarded up and abandoned. On April 9, 2016, a fire that was started accidentally by a photographer burned the wooden structure to the ground. This piece of history is gone now. All that remains is an empty lot.
