Geocache Description:

Gigantopithecus

Last of the "Bigfoot" series to give you something to dwell on while you are in the deep and dark woods Geocaching. Gigantopitheous (say that correctly because I can't) is an extinct ape like creature that lived 9 million to as recently as 100,000 years ago. It's noted region of roaming is now considered to be the area of China, India and Vietnam.

This primate is the largest ever known primate to ever live. They averaged 9.8 feet tall and weighed 1,190 to 1,320 pounds.

>p>Now since you know a little about this "Bigfoot", if it lived 9 million years ago to as close to 100,000 years ago, why can it not live a little longer and be alive today? Every creature (including man) has the ability to adapt. The Gigantopitheous (say that again correctly) just may have conquered adaptation and be living today as the Abominable Snowman of the Himalayan mountains, maybe as the Giant Sloth (Mapinguari) of the Amazon, the Almas in central Asia, or the Yeren of central China. Maybe the adaptation of this creature is our own "Bigfoot" or "Skunk Ape" here in the swamps of Florida.

WATCH OUT !!!! It just might be after you.

About CREW:

The CREW Land and Water Trust is a private, non-profit conservation organization dedicated to the preservation and stewardship of the water resources and natural communities in and around the Corkscrew Regional Ecosystem Watershed (CREW). This 60,000-acre watershed in partnership with the South Florida Water Management District (which owns and manages the land) and the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission (which monitors wildlife, hunting, and provides law enforcement on CREW). CREW is the largest intact watershed in southwest Florida, straddling Lee and Collier Counties. CREW’s majestic 5,000-acre sawgrass marsh is the headwaters for the entire watershed – which includes the National Audubon Society’s famous Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary – located south of the marsh.

Thanks to Jessi Drummond and the staff at CREW for allowing us to use the CREW trails for geocaching.
