State Fact: Octave Chanute was a Chicago engineer and early pioneer in aviation. He flew gliders at Indiana Dunes and visited Kitty Hawk when the Wright brothers were testing gliders. The Chanute Air Force Base in Illinois, now decommissioned, was named after him. A town in Kansas is named for him. As an engineer, he built the Chicago and Kansas City stockyards and the the first bridge to cross the Missouri River at Kansas City. He is buried at Springdale Cemetery, Peoria.
