Geocache Description:

The origin of the name Greyhound is lost in antiquity, but it almost certainly does not refer to the colour of the dog. Grey coloured Greyhounds are rare and they are not referred to as grey, but 'blue'. Greyhounds are the oldest purebred dog, dating to the time of the Pharoahs. The first record of Greyhound type dogs appeared about 8,000 years ago.

In ancient Egypt, Greyhounds were revered as gods and only royalty were allowed to own them. All sight hounds today (dogs who hunt by sight rather than scent) are descended from the ancient Greyhound. Greyhounds appear in Greek and Roman mythology. Greyhounds are by far the fastest breed of dog, reaching speeds in excess of 40 mph for short distances. They are very gentle, placid dogs.

Famous Greyhound owners include Alexander the Great, Elizabeth I, Pharoah Tutenkamen, Henry VIII, Annette Crosbie and Charlie Watts.

FUN FACTS:
The Greyhound is the only breed of dog mentioned by name in the Bible, King James' Version, Proverbs 30:29-31.
Both Chaucer and Shakespeare immortalised Greyhounds in literature in Canterbury Tales/Henry V.

The Greyhound was the first European dog in the New World, when they accompanied Christopher Columbus in September 1493.

The Greyhound is Britain's 20th most popular breed.
