Beloved in England, Corgis have been part of the British Royal family for over 70 years. Queen Elizabeth II has owned more than 30 Corgis, making the breed synonymous with the Royal Family.
Historically, the Pembroke has been attributed to the influx of dogs alongside Flemish weavers from around the 10th Century. Corgis evolved into 2 types after the 1930s, the Cardigan and the Pembroke. Despite their stocky build, Corgis are one of the most athletic breeds. It is apparently the 11th smartest dog, able to learn commands in 5-10 repetitions. At just a foot tall, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi is the smallest of the herding breeds.
Famous Corgi owners include Kiefer Sutherland, Ava Gardner, Stephen King, Betty White.
FUN FACTS:
In Welsh, 'cor' means dwalf and 'gi' means dog.
Corgis are closely related to Siberian Huskies. They are both in the Spitz famiy of dogs, characterised by their thick fur and pointed ears and muzzle.
The Corgi is the 82nd most popular dog in Britain.
