The Airedale Terrier is named after the place of its origin, the Valley of Aire in Yorkshire. Also known as the King of Terriers, it is the largest type of Terrier in the world. It is a very intelligent and independent dog.
The Airedale Terrier was created 150 years ago by mixing Welsh Terrier and Otter Hound. Being a very courageous dog with great stamina, it was often used as ambulance and watchdog and to carry messages, food and ammunition between British batallions during WWI. In the more recent history, it was used as police search and rescue dog, before it was replaced by the German Shepherd.
Famous Airedale Terrier owners include Edgar Rice Burroughs (author of Tarzan, he called his dog Tarzan), Olivia de Havilland, John Steinbeck, Woodrow Wilson, Roosevelt.
FUN FACT:
John Wayne had an Airedale Terrier called Duke, from which the actor got his nickname.
The Airedale Terrier is the 96th most popular dog in Britain.
