The Lhasa Apso has a long history in its country of origin, Tibet. It has existed since 800 AD and for centuries lived in isolation with Tibetan Buddhists in the Himalayan Mountains. Lhasa is actually the capital of Tibet. Their Tibetan name Abso Seng Kye means Bark Lion Sentinel Dog! They were given as gifts in Tibet, considered to be a sign of good fortune. The Dalai Lama even gave a Lhasa Apso to the Emperor of China many centuries ago (this is the predominant theory of how the Shih Tzu came about).
Famous Lhasa Apso owners include Liberace, Ellen deGeneres, Gwen Stefani and Liz Taylor.
FUN FACT:
Some Lhasa Apsos live to their late teens and some beyond 20. The oldest was 29 years old!
The Lhasa Apso is the 27th most popular dog in Britain.
