Geocache Description:

It is believed that this breed originated in Malta. They were bred down from a Spitz-like dog that was native to the area and was used for hunting rodents. The breed has had different names, Comforter Dog, Malt Lion Dog, Maltese Terrier etc. It is one of the oldest-known breeds of dogs and is said to be over 2,800 years old. The dogs were especially bred by Roman Emperors to have the white coat we know today. The colour white was sacred to the Romans. The lapdogs were a hit among royalty; queens especially would cherish these pooches, feeding them out of gold dishes. The dog's likeness has been found on ceramics and other pieces of artwork in Egypt and Greece. The Maltese hit British shores under the reign of King Henry VIII.

Famous Maltese owners include Halle Berry, Liz Taylor, Marilyn Monroe, Barbara Streisand, Emperor Claudius.

FUN FACTS:
Leona Helmsley, a Real Estate Developer left £12 million in her will to her Maltese 'Take Trouble'.

The Maltese has hair, not fur, which grows like human hair and occasionally falls out. They don't shed.

The Maltese is Britain's 48th most popular dog.
