Gaining their name from the dangerous St. Bernard pass in the Alps between Italy and Switzerland, the breed was famous for rescuing people lost in the snow and in avalanches. They have been called St. Bernard since the mid 1800s. Before that, they were known as Barry Dog or Noble Steeds.
Famous St. Bernards in films include Beethoven and the Nana, the St. Bernard in the Disney version of Peter Pan.
FUN FACTS:
The most famous St. Bernard was Barry, who rescued between 45 - 100 people. He even has his own monument and his body rests in the National History Museum in Berne, Switzerland.
The St. Bernard didn't actually ever have a small barrel of brandy about its neck!
The St. Bernard is Britain's 84th most popular dog.
