Geocache Description:

From its source to its mouth, the Mersey River flows through varied topography, rich agricultural land and many interesting centres of population. The Meandering the Mersey (MTM) series will follow, as much as pracitcal, the course of the Mersey River with caches being placed at varying intervals. We trust you will enjoy the area.

Bells Parade is the jewel in the Latrobe Municipality. It is a wonderful location where individuals or family groups can swim, fish, use the play equipment and enjoy the many walking paths. It is also the venue for numerous community events and has been for over a century.

The most significant event held at Bells Parade is the Henley on Mersey Regatta. First held in 1911 Henley was designed as a community celebration which encouraged locals to participate in a range of water based fun activities such as swimming, greasy pole, boating, diving and land based activities such as chopping, listening to the Latrobe Federal Brass Band and a Miss Henley competition as well as lunches and afternoon teas. In the late 1920s and early 1930s Mr y'stassie's father used to dive off the 40 foot (12m) diving tower into 3-4m of water. This wasn't a fun activity - it was serious competition with the winner getting a cup and bragging rights for the coming year. Over the years the nature of the activities have changed. OH&S stopped many, such as the diving, and popularity of particular events waxed and waned. A current favourite with all who attend is the ferret races with bragging rights being highly prized. The Latrobe Federal Brass Band is still a focus activity for the day. For many years now Henley on the Mersey has been held as an Australia Day activity.

The area is flood prone and any cache at ground level has a short lifetime. So, this cache is a bison tube and is tethered by a cable tie about 1500mm above ground level. Enjoy the hunt as you explore the area.
