There's feldspar in them thar hills!
Hidden away in the Mt Beckworth Scenic Reserve is a little known mine. A mine that boasts an impressive view. The mine reportedly produced feldspar which is derived from feldspath, an german word which describes a group of crystaline minerals that crystalize from magma which become igneous rocks. These minerals are used in a wide variety of applications such as glass making and ceramics. The exact use of the feldspar from this mine remains a mystery, however given its relative small size this mine was never that sucessful.
The walk up is best approached from the Cork Oaks campground (see attached parking point). The mine is about half way to the summit of Mt Beckworth, so you may as well keep going once you have found this cache.
- If walking to the mine only, allow 40 minutes return for an average fitness person.
- If walking to the summit allow 2 hours.
As always with bushwalking, please take some water and wear appropriate footwear.
