Geocache Description:

Welcome to Pixy Pond

This hidden Gem of the Ozarks is sure to a favorite of most. This small Pool of water has most likely been here for thousands of years with maybe the exceptions of drought years. It is the result of techtonic plate moment and the forming of the pleateaus in the region. When the hills in this area were formed from the earths plates shifting and crashing into each other. They forced the ground upwards forming the hills and valleys that you just hiked through. As the plates shifted the local topology caused a small fracture between these two hill sides. With some being pushed upwards others were forced down effecting the local water table.

200 million years ago this area was under water at the time Pangea formed, creating modern time North and South America. As other larger mountains in North America were being pushed up and forming it also created fratcures in this area. As they crashed into each other locally forming the hills and valley s in the area. This area is somewhat north of the Boston mountains but the effects locally are due to their formation. The land massed that crashed into each other in this area are the Boston Mountains, Springfield Plateau and Salem Plateau.

Map of minor plates

When it pushed all of the is land mass up is caused the water to drain off leaving this dry for vegitation to form and errosion to help shange the land that we see today. According to geologists if you were to drill through the Boston mountain pleateau you would find the Springfiled plateau underneath, and with further drilling you would find the salem pleateau. Being near the intersection of these three help form all of the creeks, lakes and bluffs that make up all of the wonderfull outdoor activities in the area.

Plate Stack Up

Hemmed in Hollow

The above picture is from a location in Arkansas. It was formed at the same time when the plates collided, it created a large offset in the elevation in the pathway of the steam above. Which is just one sides effect of collisions.

As the earth pushed into each other it also had effects upon aquifers below that can be seen on the surface. It placed breaks and cracks into the layers of nonpermeable rock and layers of clay. This created passages all the way through to the surface . Allowing the water under pressure to be forced up to the surface. This is known as a Limnocrene spring with this type of emergence and setting which was originally catagorized in 1913 by Bornhouser.
This can be seen at the posted coordinates for this cache.
