State Fact: Betty Friedan, credited with sparking the women's movement of the 1960s with her book The Feminine Mystique, was born in Peoria and attended high school in Peoria. Betty Friedan once debated Phyllis Schafly, a famous opponent of the Equal Rights Amendment who was from Alton, IL.
