The Kraken is a legendary sea monster said to dwell off of the coasts of Norway and Greenland. It is thought that the legend of this monster started from the sightings of giant squid, which can reach lengths of over 50 feet. The earliest account is from writings of King Sverre of Norway way back in 1180. The Kraken is said to be able to grasp a ship in its tentacles and drag it to the bottom or, if that didn;t work, it would swim in circles around the ship creating a whirlpool which would suck the unlucky vessel to the bottom.
