Visitors to the Llanthony Valley are often confused when they visit ‘Llanthony Abbey’ to find it is a Priory not an Abbey, and that a few miles further up the road is Llanthony Abbey - which is also not an Abbey but a Monastery. The confusion is that the Reverend Joseph Leycester Lyne better known as Father Ignatius, had hoped to build his Monastery at Llanthony, but could get nowhere with the agents acting for the owner Water Savage Landor, who had already left the valley to live in Italy. Determined to build his Monastery, Father Ignatius bought Ty Gwyn Farm at Capel-y-ffin and began the mammoth task of building there in an effort to restore monastic life for men in the Church of England. Father Ignatius attracted large congregations wherever he preached and was said by Mr. Gladstone to be the finest orator of his generation.
The Monastery is now a private residence and Father Ignatius is buried beneath the floor of his uncompleted nearby church. In 1880 Father Ignatius and several others witnessed a vision in a field near the Monastery, in front of which, now stands the beautiful statue of The Blessed Virgin Mary. At the side of the field stands a calvery near the spot where the apparition occurred. The occasion is still commemorated each year by a well attended pilgrimage walk from St. David’s Church Llanthony to Capel y ffin.
