Tikkurilan taistelu käytiin Helsingin pitäjän punakaartin ja Saksan Itämeren divisioonan välillä 12. – 13.4. 1918. Taistelu oli osa 10. – 14.4. tapahtunutta Helsingin valtausta.
Punakaartissa taisteli lähinnä ensimmäistä kertaa linjaan hälytettyjä paikallisia osastoja aseenaan metsästyskiväärejä. Kaartilaiset puolustautuivat avonaisessa maastossa omista taloistaan ja niiden pihoista käsin. Lisäksi Malmin ja Tikkurilan asemien välillä kulki kaksi punaisten panssarijunaa. Saksalaiset saivat vallattua Tikkurilan aseman iltapäivällä 12.4.1918. Illalla kaksi etelästä hyökännyttä punaisten osastoa yritti vallata aseman, mutta saksalaiset torjuivat hyökkäykset. Seuraavana aamuna punaisten panssarijuna hyökkäsi jälleen Tikkurilan asemalle ja lisäksi punaiset yrittivät yllättää saksalaiset karttoihin merkitsemätöntä sivuraidetta pitkin, mutta hyökkäykset torjuttiin jälleen. Taistelun jälkeen punakaartilaiset pakenivat Porvoontietä kohti itää. Saksalaiset menettivät taisteluissa kaksi kaatunutta; punaisia kerrotan kaatuneen lähteestä riippuen 25-100.
Tikkurilan taistelussa kaatuneet punakaartilaiset on haudattu joukkohautaan Jokiniemessä. Lisäksi osa on haudattu Hiekkaharjuun, jossa muistomerkki sijaitsee. Muistomerkin paljastustilaisuudessa elokuussa 1949 siunattiin 68 vainajaa. Muistomerkki on Vehmaan punaista graniittia. Siinä on risti ja vuosiluku 1918 sekä teksti: "HE KAATUIVAT AATTEENSA PUOLESTA".

The battle of Tikkurila took place between the Red Guards of Helsinki parish (today City of Vantaa) and the German Baltic Sea Division (as a part of the White Army) in 12-13 April 1918. The battle was part of the takeover of Helsinki in 10-14 April 1918 during the Finnish civil war.
The Red Guards mainly consisted of contingents called out to the front for the first time and armed with hunting rifles. The red guardsmen fought back in open terrain from their own houses and backyards. In addition, two armored trains of the Reds were moving between the Malmi and Tikkurila railway stations. The Germans took Tikkurila over in the afternoon of 12 April 1918. Two Red contingents attacked from the south in the evening to take over the station, but the Germans repelled the attacks. Next morning the armored train attacked the Tikkurila station again and the Reds tried to overtake the Germans along a sidetrack not marked on the maps, but again the attacks were repelled. After the battle, the red guardsmen fled along the Porvoo Road towards the East. The Germans lost two soldiers in the battle, the Red Guards lost 25-100, depending on the source.
The red guardsmen fallen in the Tikkurila battle were buried to the mass grave in Jokiniemi. In addition, some of them were buried in Hiekkaharju, where this memorial is located. 69 deceased were blessed in the opening ceremony of the memorial in August 1949. The memorial is made of Vehmaa red granite. It has a cross, the year 1918 and a text “THEY FELL FOR THEIR IDEOLOGY”.
