Geocache Description:

History of Presque Isle Fog Signal

In 1899 , the U.S. Lighthouse Service established a new fog signal station at the NE most tip of Presque Isle peninsula. The signal warned mariners of the low-lying, sandy peninsula as they navigated into or out of Erie Harbor. The new fog signal was operated during times of low visibilty by keepers housed in the Light House Service quarters at today's U.S. Coast Guard station.

Operators would travel to the signal when fog, snow, or rain reduced visibility on the Lake and the effectiveness of the Light House beacons. Keepers would fire up a steam engine generating a head of steam in storage vessels. The steam would be released through a 10" steam whistle at prescribed intervals: thereby  identifying the station to ship captains although they could not see the station or the shore. With-in 20 years, Presque Isle peninsula had grown several 100 feet more to the NE, reducing effectiveness of the original fog signal which was now located well inland from the new shoreline.

This cache takes you past the foundation of the old fog signal.
