L'hôtel de Cluny est une demeure construite dans le style gothique en 1485, elle accueille le musée du Moyen-âge depuis son rachat par l'Etat en 1843. La richesse des décorations n'est pas due au hasard, il s'agissait pour l'abbé de Cluny d'en mettre plein les yeux avec un bâtiment complexe fait de matériaux coûteux et de décorations opulentes. Heureusement, la puissance financière de cet abbé n'était pas suffisante pour détruire les thermes antiques qui jouxtent l'hôtel et s'intègrent au bâtiment.
Après avoir eu quelques propriétaires, l'hôtel de Cluny appartint en 1833 à Alexandre de Sommerard, conseiller à la cour des comptes et amateur d'art médiéval. Il y déposa sa collection qui fut rachetée par l'état à sa mort.
Aujourd'hui, le musée couvre l'histoire des arts depuis la gaule romaine jusqu'au 16e siècle par une exposition de 2300 objets (parmi 23000 œuvres). La collection possède de nombreuses œuvres liées à l'histoire de Paris et notamment la fameuse tenture "La dame à la licorne" mais aussi le "Pilier des Nautes", plus ancien monument daté de Paris (règne de Tibère 14-37), découvert sous le cœur de Notre-Dame au 18e siècle.

[En] The hotel Cluny is a house built in the Gothic style in 1485, it hosts the museum of the Middle Ages since its purchase by the State in 1843. The wealth of it's decorations is not due to chance, it was for the abbot of Cluny to impress with a complex building made of expensive materials and opulent decorations. Fortunately, the financial power of this abbot was not enough to destroy the ancient roman baths that adjoins the hotel and fit into the building.
After having some owners, the hotel of Cluny belonged in 1833 to Alexandre de Sommerard, advisor to the court of accounts and medieval art lover. He deposited his collection which was bought by the state at his death.
Today, the museum covers the history of the arts from the Roman Gaul until the 16th century with an exhibition of 2300 objects (among 23000 works). The collection has many works related to the history of Paris including the famous tapestry "The lady to the unicorn" but also the "Pillar of the Nautesw", the oldest dated monument of Paris (reign of Tiberius 14-37), discovered under the heart of Notre-Dame in the 18th century.
