2018 Winter Solstice (Wellington) Event Cache

This cache has been archived.

SAROC: Thanks everyone for making this another memorable event. Stay safe out there in your travels and hunting. We must have been successful in attracting the sun back down to the southern hemisphere as the days are getting longer again - slowly though.
Catch you on the trails or at the next event.
Regards SAROC and Mrs SAROC

Geocache Description:

The 21st of June at 22:07 (10.07pm) is the date and time of the Winter Solstice this year for New Zealand. From this time the days will grow a bit longer every day and bring us nearer to summer, so let's celebrate with an Event Cache.

Mr and Mrs SAROC once again invite you to come along to entice the sun back to the Southern Hemisphere and share in the hospitality. Children are very welcome.

From Wikipedia:
"Winter solstice is an astronomical phenomenon which marks the shortest day and longest night of the year.
More evident from high latitudes, a hemisphere's winter solstice occurs on the shortest day and longest night of the year, when the sun's daily maximum elevation in the sky is at its lowest. The winter solstice itself lasts only a moment in time, so other terms are used for the day on which it occurs, such as "midwinter", or the "shortest day". It is often considered the "extreme of winter" (Dongzhi in the Chinese calendar).
The seasonal significance of the winter solstice is in the reversal of the gradual lengthening of nights and shortening of days. The earliest sunset and latest sunrise dates differ from winter solstice, however, and these depend on latitude, due to the variation in the solar day throughout the year caused by the Earth's elliptical orbit.
Worldwide, interpretation of the event has varied across cultures, but many have held a recognition of rebirth, involving holidays, festivals, gatherings, rituals or other celebrations around that time."

Trackables

Do you have any trackables that you would like to display, move along or drop off?  Bring them along and place in the appropriate container for people to view or pick up to move along.

This is an ideal opportunity to meet the people who have created some of those interesting and memorable caches in the Wellington region. Come along, bring the whole family or any friends to share the hospitality and friendly relaxed social atmosphere. We'll have some indoor activities for the kids to do so they can keep themselves occupied.

As always, new cachers are most welcome. Come and say hi, don't be shy as event gatherings are a terrific way to meet fellow geocachers. We're all different, have our own goals, partake in the 'game' in our own way but have a common interest.
Do you have a question (or many!!) over what to do, a puzzling hide that has had you returning a number of times with out success so far. Or that tricky puzzle - you can always try your luck with the cache owner (CO) or a recent finder.

Please post a "will attend" log if you plan to join us along with approximate numbers, so we can give the Restaurant an idea of how many people may turn up. We will be upstairs, you'll know where if you've been there before, if not, walk in through the doors and the stairs are on your left just before the bar.
