Geocache Description:

Not to be confused with Avonbank Viaduct. This is a quick cache and dash. Its a nod to the old Viaduct that used to cross this field on the Slammannan to Boness Railway. The only remains of this Viaduct can be seen where I have placed the cache.

An area of low ground lying about a quarter of a mile N of Manual House is crossed by the viaduct, now demolished, that once carried the Slamannan and Borrowstounness Joint Railway. The Manuel Burn passed under the viaduct at its NE end and the Crownerland Burn near its centre. As the railway was authorised in 1846, the viaduct must have been built very soon after that date. The structure was approximately 250yds long, and contained twenty-three arches. The masonry of both piers and the superstructure is rock-faced, block-in-course, the piers have dressed V-chennelled quoins, and the parapet finishes in a flat coping; but the archivolts were of brick and the general appearance was undistinguished. The piers, which tapered slightly, were spaced with their centres 35ft apart; their basal thickness varies, on account of their taper, with changes in the level of the ground, but may be taken as averaging just under 6ft. The transverse breadth of the work was 15ft 9in. The highest arch -the one that spanned the Crownerland Burn- sprung at a height above the water of 32ft, and arose 9ft 6in above the springing line; its total height, to the parapet, was 48ft. Where the ground is higher, however, these figures are naturally smaller; for example, the arch that spanned the road from Linlithgow Bridge to Maddiston sprung only 25ft above the surface of the road. The two terminal arches abut, to NE and NW respectively, on the ends of earthwork embankments. The Viaduct was demolished sometime in the 1960s. Congratulations to Numpties96 on being the FTF!!!!!
