The phenomenon of tramps seems to have all but disappeared in recent times. Some people from around Dunboyne and area can remember ‘Mad’ Murray, Redbeard, Castor and his dancing dolls, the Lily white and many more. Some had their regular places to stay on their visits through the locality. Molloy’s Hotel was the name of one such place.
MOLLOYS’ HOTEL
You grand sons of Erin
If you want a repose
Come down to Molloys’ shed
And have a good doze
From all parts of Erin
They come there to sleep
The trooper, the scooper
The tinker, the sweep.
The old Lily White
She got such a fright
When she met Jim Connolly
In the dead of night
He was going at his dead best
Away in his pelt
He was after a flea
That ran away with his belt
The flea and the bugs
Would set you half mad
Like cattle in Summer
Running away from the gad
Itching and scratching and taring like hell,
Many a flew lost his life
In Molloys’ Hotel
Molloy’s Hotel was a shed in a field off the Killarkin-Vesington Roa where throughout the year for a number of years many a knight or queen of the road made overnight stays.
This is a quick roadside cache, with parking for 1 or 2 cars.
The cache in NOT in the field.
