Geocache Description:

These caches have been placed with the kind permission of Suffolk Wildlife Trust.

Hen Reedbeds is a blend of reedbeds, fens, dykes and pools created to provide new breeding habitat for bittern and other wildlife. We have seen a number of different birds whilst walking in the area over the summer months look out for bittern, marsh harrier, heron, bearded tit, along with many other birds. If you listen you will hear the reed and sedge warblers sing to their hearts’ content. Far more secretive are the otter and water vole which also live here.

This walk which is a linear walk to the furthest hide will take you across the mere, reedbed and then across the road where viewing platforms can be found overlooking Wolsey Creek Marshes, a good place to spot wildfowl such as gadwall, tufted duck, shoveler and also little grebes. At low tide scan the mudflats which are the perfect spots for feeding waders – redshank, avocet and sandpiper are all regulars here. Further along Wolsey Creek are two hides overlooking smaller scrapes and islands which often give views of godwits, oyster catchers, teal, little egrets and kingfishers.

The complete walk from number 1 to 6 and back again is just over 2 Miles. There is a reasonable amount of parking at number 1

Please remember that this is Suffolk Wildlife Trust land please keep to the footpaths and respect birdwatchers in the area.
