We received more and interesting information about the area from geocachers “Wind and water”. With many thanks and with their permission we have placed them here.
The story of the place is interesting and typical of an awful way of thinking that has only caused trouble: The owner of the whole place used to come from Livadia, a mountainous village on Mt Psiloritis. This village remained stuck to traditions and didn't manage to keep updated with the modern world, except in terms of being "clever", which means breaking the law without being caught. The owner owned some flock of sheep and also a great area of the slopes of the mountains you can see all around. And the land was his because nobody had ever claimed the opposite in decades. The place where the garbage of Heraklion had been burried was close by and belonged to him too. One day his sheep went to the (then open) garbage place and ate some rubbish that caused their death. The owner was furious and blackmailed the Municipality of Heraklion that he would stop accepting garbage on his land if he was not compensated. Garbage had always been a big problem for the island, it was in big quantities and there was no suitable space for it. Eventually, he got the piece of land where the cache is hidden and permission to open a gas station. Little by little he expanded his territory and built the houses opposite the road. When he died a couple of yeas ago, his relatives built the church of Konstantinos & Eleni. Doesn't the story sound like a Mafia film? By the way, the same place is used for garbage today but it's modern and according το all laws and regulations of the EU. Recycling also takes place all over the island. wind&water
