I started the Johnny Appleseed series about three months ago as I watched my caching karma droop over the years, and felt the need to give back, and explore the local trails in a different perspective. Since those 50 caches were placed, my karma has doubled from 0.35 to over 0.70, so I'm starting round two, sprinkling caches along the trails just a bit farther from home.
This cache is in the lovely and peaceful Byrne Preserve in Los Altos Hills. The area is a maze of twisty trails and sidetrails, peopled by dog walkers and horse riders, but mostly not peopled much at all. It seemed to be asking for some caches so I took the time to explore the area and leave some motivation for you to explore as well. I was able to park in a pull out (room for two cars) just off Byrne Park Lane. It appears there is other parking nearby as well, such as close to this cache on Altamont. I started on Byrne Park Lane and climbed up to this lovely meadow where there were several horses dozing under the oaks. Such a peaceful setting with wonderful views! I meandered over to this oak and was VERY tempted to make another tree climb cache, as you can imagine if you are at GZ. But I resisted so as to not disturb this currently-sturdy oak that might be used to the 9 year old climbing enthusiast, but not quite ready for others of us. The cache is in the northwest corner of the tree among the branches. It is up a bit high but reachable if you are tall, or attainable by other means if you are not. It is not in the birdhouse!
Congratulations to camnpete for their first JAS FTF!
Good luck, enjoy the trail, and remember it is good to give back!
