Percorrendo la strada che da San Giovanni Lupatoto si dirige verso sud si passa vicino ad uno strano parallelepipedo di cemento. La costruzione è piuttosto brutta e il viaggiatore, passando velocemente, si domanda che cosa sia,magari un pezzo di un edificio incompiuto, un manufatto idraulico, il monolite di 2001 Odissea nello Spazio o chissà cos'altro.
In realtà, come qualche volta accade, questo oggetto piuttosto insignificante nasconde una storia interessante che risale alla seconda guerra mondiale.
A quel tempo la superstrada Transpolesana non esisteva e la strada più veloce che da Verona portava verso sud, in direzione Legnago e poi verso Rovigo e Ferrara era proprio questa.
Nella primavera del 1945 le truppe nazi-fasciste di stanza a Verona si stavano preparando all'ultima resistenza. Gli alleati sarebbero arrivati da sud, probabilmente proprio da questa strada e bisognava preparare delle contromisure.
Questo manufatto in cemento faceva proprio parte degli ostacoli da attivare alla vista dei primi carriarmati americani. E' costruito al lato della strada, le fondamenta poggiano su dei pilastri e tutta la base è cava. Era quindi possibile piazzare velocemente dell'esplosivo per farlo crollare verso la strada e rallentare l'avanzata del nemico.
Non sappiamo nei dettagli come fini la storia. Forse l'avanzata alleata fu troppo veloce o forse gli ultimi brandelli dell'esercito nazista ormai pensavano solo a scappare verso Nord. Comunque questa costruzione è ancora qui, probabilmente l'ultimo ancora in piedi, muto testimone a ricordarci di quando la guerra e la distruzione percorreva le nostre strade.
Ultima curiosità: 26 Aprile e non 25 perchè a San Giovanni Lupatoto gli americani arrivarono con una giorno di ritardo sulla data ufficiale della Liberazione.
Attenzione la strada è molto trafficata ed è meglio parcheggiare nel punto indicato , prestando molta attenzione all'attraversamento

Going along the road that leads from San Giovanni Lupatoto to the south, you pass near a strange concrete parallelepiped. The construction is rather ugly and the traveler, passing quickly, wonders what it is, maybe a piece of an unfinished building, a hydraulic artifact or who knows what else.
In fact, as sometimes happens, this rather insignificant object hides an interesting story dating back to World War II.
At that time the Transpolesana highway had not been built and the fastest road from Verona to the south, towards Legnago and then towards Rovigo and Ferrara was just that.
In the spring of 1945 the Nazi-Fascist troops stationed in Verona were preparing for the last resistance. The allies would have come from the south, probably from this road and it was necessary to prepare countermeasures.
This concrete artefact was part of the obstacles to be activated at the sight of the first American tanks. It is built at the side of the road, the foundations rest on pillars and the whole base is hollow. It was therefore possible to quickly place the explosives in order to make it collapse towards the road and slow down the enemy's advance.
We do not know in detail how the story ends up. Perhaps the allied advance was too fast or perhaps the last shreds of Nazi activity now thought only of fleeing to the north. However, this construction is still here, probably the last still standing, silent witness to remind us of when war and destruction went our way.
