That's right, the major constituent of the construction of this rounded building is straw bales! Unique in both design and construction, this is one of the structures you could easily pass by (due to location) and never notice, but once you see it - you can't unsee it.
It is unclear why the building and the concept became abandoned after only two structures were erected, or why the owners of the property have chosen to keep this building but not use it. Perhaps that will be a story for another geocache.
We had to do a lot of digging to find out about this particular rounded building. It was built sometime prior to 2005 as a showhome / office.
This type of construction experienced a revival of sorts with two energy-conscious Calgary architects in the early 1990's, so there may be some other examples around Calgary and area.
The only other structure in Didsbury built with the same methods is a private home (see waypoint for location, but keep in mind it is an occupied home so please be respectful).
