Geocache Description:

Cache placed with kind permission of the landowner.

Catching spies with old money
...

This cache recalls the tale of one Karl Heinrich Meier, a Nazi spy of Dutch origin. He was landed along with an accomplice off the coat of Lydd in Kent during 1940. Meier was carrying a substantial sum of cash and was supposed to send back useful information to Germany via a transmitter. The plan was for him to hold out long enough for invading Nazi forces to overrun Kent and recover him.

Despite speaking good English, he aroused suspicion when he made a number of catastrophic mistakes, notably going into the Rising Sun pub at 9am and asking for a brand of cider that was no longer available. He was ultimately served but when he came to pay he was told the bill was ‘One ‘n’ a tanner’. This flummoxed him and he offered a handful cash for the landlady to take. The landlady had served him simply to keep him there whilst the Police were called, though the money mix-up confirmed her suspicions.
Meier was arrested and subsequently hanged along with two other spies. The trials and hangings were well publicised, partly as a ruse to fool the Nazis into thinking that all captured spies would be given a similar show trial if discovered when in reality some were captured and covertly turned under the Double Cross programme.

The cache is well hidden on the edge of farmland with permission. It’s on the ‘green side’ and you will need to scale a small wooden fence to access it. It’s ‘muggle resistant’ and you’ll need a combination to open the box to sign the log. If you think Karl Heinrich Meier was a little daft, have a go yourself. Offer the landlady a £1 note to pay the bill of ‘One ‘n’ a tanner’. The change in LSD is the combination, though clearly you won’t need the ‘L’ from a single quid. -with me so far? First two digits are the shillings, second two are the pence. Thanks Plasmawave for being the FTF 'guinea pig'!

Don't forget to randomise the combination afterwards.
