Gäddan har en långsträckt, spolformad kropp. Huvudet är stort och nosen uppifrån tillplattad. Gapet är mycket stort. Ryggen är ofta mörk. Sidorna är något ljusare och i olika mån gulstrimmiga, buken blekt gul. Fenorna är grönaktiga. Honorna blir betydligt större än hanarna.
Gäddan är en rovfisk och äter således andra fiskar, även artfränder. Gäddan sväljer alltid fiskbyten med huvudet först, och kan utan problem klara bytesdjur upp till och med halva dess egen längd. Den största gäddan som fångats i Sverige vägde 21 070 gram och var 128 centimeter lång.
Gäddan är en fin matfisk och särskilt fin lär isgäddan vara. CO har lite svårt för alla ben i gäddan och föredrar att äta den som gäddfärs med en god räksås och pressad potatis.
The pike
The pike has an elongated spool shaped body. The head is large and the nose upwards flattened. The mouth is very big. The back is often dark. The sides are slightly lighter and in some ways yellow striped, the pale bleached yellow. The fins are greenish. The females are significantly bigger than the males.
The pike is a predatory fish and thus eats other fish, including other pike. The pike always swallows the other fish head first, and can easily handle fish up to half its own length. The largest pike caught in Sweden weighed 21 070 grams and was 128 centimeters long.
The pike is a nice food fish and the ones caught through a hole in the ice are supposed to be especially good. CO finds all the small bones in the pike difficult to handle and prefer to eat the pate of pike, served with a good shrimp sauce and mashed potatoes.
