Geocache Description:

THE CACHE IS NOT AT THE POSTED COORDINATES

This cache was placed in observance of the 110th anniversary of the Purvis tornado.

On April 24, 1908 storm clouds covered the entire gulf coast and eventually produced four separate storms in which over 200 people were killed. In Purvis, shortly before 2:00pm the clouds took on a funnel shape and began to move toward the town. The force of the storm was so strong that it moved the depot across the railroad tracks and toppled railroad cars. The large “Town Clock” in the domed tower of the Courthouse at the time, sustained damage from flying debris and was stopped at 2:13pm in the afternoon. In the reported three-minute length of the storm's destruction, a majority of the 125 residences were severely damaged or completely destroyed, the business district was leveled, and more than 50 people were killed.

The tornado that destroyed Purvis that day is still ranked as the 8th deadliest tornado in United States history.
