Papwa Sewgolum
Sewsunker "Papwa" Sewgolum is part of our little-known South African hisory, and more so from a golfing perspective. In short, Papwa was an ethnic Indian professional golfer who made world headlines in 1963 when he beat 103 white golfers at Durban Country Club to win the Natal Open but was not allowed inside the building because of the Apartheid regime's segregation laws at the time. Papwa had to stand outside in the rain to wait to receive his trophy. The headlines went viral around the world and pressure to ban South African sport gained momentum
I was honoured to play in a tournament alongside his grandson and joined the family table after the event where I met Papwa's widow and other family members
This cache is a tribute to Sewsunker's memory...
