Geocache Description:

This cache has been placed to commemorate where the Canberra Greyhound Racing Club (CGRC) once stood, just across the paddock, serving 39 years of service.

In June 1968, a public meeting led to the formation of the CGRC. In 1972, after a feasibility study suggested a greyhound course would likely be a financial success in Canberra, a plan was drawn up and submitted to the National Capital Development Commission. Obtaining the funds to begin the work of track construction took until 1977. In November that year, the Department of the Capital Territory approved the lease of 10 hectares on Jerrabomberra Avenue in Narrabundah.

Construction work began in March 1978, and was completed 7 months later.

The 461-metre circumference sand track held its official opening meeting on Sunday 28th January 1979 with 10 races, eight over 530 metres and two over 732 metres. A crowd of just over 5,200 attended the afternoon meeting with Ben Gurion, trained by Ken Howe, winning the first race, over 530 metres.

The club hosted one Group race per year: the Group 3 Canberra Cup, run over 530 metres. This was first run in 1979, and was raised to Group status in 2005.

In February 2015, media reports detailed use of live baiting in the training of greyhounds. The revelation led to suspensions, inquiries and widespread condemnation of the practice. Following an inquiry, greyhound racing was to be banned in NSW and the ACT from 1 July 2017.

On 11th October 2016 the NSW ban was reversed, but this was not the case for the CGRC, as it is now banned in the ACT.

The CGRC held its final meeting on Sunday 29th April 2018, where in race 6, dog number 6, Smoothe Blend, won the Canberra Cup Final. At 9:07pm the Les Manwaring Memorial Members Final race, held in honour of the club's longest serving chairman, was run over 440 metres. A strong crowd of over 1000 people, who clapped as the dogs paraded for the last time gathered as the race was won, ironically by dog number 3, Community Values, named after it was suggested that the greyhound industry is out of step with community values.

You are looking for a small cache which should not be difficult to find.
