天津市由于处于海河流域下游的九河下梢，自古建有大量各式各样的桥梁。自从2002年起，天津市开始对海河进行综合开发以后，除对原有桥梁进行修缮、提升和改造之外，还邀请英国、美国、日本等多个国家的桥梁建筑设计公司共同对天津海河的桥梁进行设计并新建了一批具有景观作用的桥梁，使得天津市区内的海河上游，平均不到0.8公里就有一座桥梁，在改善交通的同时也提升了海河的景观。
狮子林桥
狮子林桥位于南开区、红桥区与河北区的交界处的海河之上，狮子林桥是中国公路桥梁建设上最早采用预应力混凝土悬臂技术的一座桥梁。2003年8月，在海河综合开发改造中，因旧桥净空不满足海河通航的要求，由天津城建设计院完成了该桥的整体顶升设计，在国内首次把顶升平移技术成功应用于桥梁改造领域，实现了国内桥梁改造技术的一大突破。狮子林桥上总计有184个狮子。
