EXTRACT FROM INSPECTOR DIMMER’S NOTES ABOUT THE VICTIM AND SUSPECTS FOLLOWING INTERVIEWS WITH THE CACHERS AT THE CAMPSITE.
MATHILDA’S MUM – the Verger’s ex-wife, originally from Scarborough. He had left Scarborough 25 years ago when the trawler he worked on was decommissioned. He said he was going to Cornwall looking for temporary work “to tide them over”. He never returned, nor attempted to contact her. She finally divorced him for desertion fifteen years ago after suffering a nervous breakdown. She later met and married Dr Fang. They live in Bridlington. She and the Verger have two children; Charlie is a cacher (ITS SHOCKING) and Mathilda is a 26 year old teacher in Sheffield.
Mathilda’s Mum had no idea her ex-husband was living in Yorkshire again. She is camping at Egam Newby as part of a family group with Dr Fang, Its Shocking, her daughter-in-law, Sophie, and grandson, Thomas. They had erected their tents and she and Dr Fang were helping another cacher to manoeuvre his camper van into position on the adjoining pitch when the Verger had run onto the campsite, shouting that the camper van was too close to the boundary wall and would damage it. Mathilda’s Mum was horrified to find herself face-to-face with her ex-husband, had screamed “You! You *¬*/*¬!”, then had run into her tent, where she burst into tears. She has avoided going into the village since then.
