Geocache Description:

The last witch burning in England took place in the town of Pocklington, of the East Riding, in 1630.

The book Yorkshire Witches recounts the stories of more than 40 supposed witches, including Knaresborough's famous Mother Shipton. Mother Shipton was born in a cave in Knaresborough and maybe because of her hideous appearance and crooked nose, people thought her father was the devil.

Mother Shipton made many predictions in her time - she predicted the great fire of London in 1666 and the defeat of the Spanish Armada. In her writing, she predicted the use of cars and boats not made of wood:

'A carriage without horse will go
Disaster fill the world with woe
In water, iron then shall float
As easy as a wooden boat.'
