天津市由于处于海河流域下游的九河下梢，自古建有大量各式各样的桥梁。自从2002年起，天津市开始对海河进行综合开发以后，除对原有桥梁进行修缮、提升和改造之外，还邀请英国、美国、日本等多个国家的桥梁建筑设计公司共同对天津海河的桥梁进行设计并新建了一批具有景观作用的桥梁，使得天津市区内的海河上游，平均不到0.8公里就有一座桥梁，在改善交通的同时也提升了海河的景观。
进步桥
进步桥西起南开区通南路，东接河北区进步道，为机动车专用桥，双向4车道，同时在车行道两侧规划了人行桥，满足行人过河及观光的需求。进步桥连通海河西岸和平路商业区和海河东岸的奥式风貌区、意式风貌区。桥体按照“见光不见灯”的原则设计，流线造型，远远望去，既像是一条跃出水面的飞鱼，又像是一列飞驰而过的子弹头列车，形态优美，栩栩如生。
