The wildly romantic Kourtaliotiko Gorge is a mountain ridge in the south of the Island of Crete between the mountains of the western Kouroupa and the eastern Xiro. The bottom of the gorge is formed by the creek bed of Megalopotamos, or Kourtaliotis, one of the ten running waterways on Crete, which runs continuously to the sea. The river reaches the sea at the beautiful palm beach of Preveli.
Through the gorge, the connecting road from Rethymno in the north to the south coast leads to Plakias and Preveli. It was only asphalted in the early 1960s and is one of the most spectacular canyons on Crete. The cliffs to the left and right rise steeply up to 250 meters, while the riverbed in places is more than 100 meters below street level.
There is a certain point near the north entrance in the gorge, where you can hear "hands-clapping". These "claps" are the "Kourtala" that give the gorge its name. They are the result of the wind being thrown through the high caverns of the gorge and breaking the sound barrier.
In the gorge there is a small church "Agios Nikolaos". Not far to the right of the path, a steep gorge opens up, from whose cliffs numerous springs of water spring and fall down up to 40 meters into the depths - magical and enchanting - this place will captivate you.
Through the stone arch stairs lead past the church to the very bottom. The gorge is very impressive seen from above and also from the bottom.

Die wildromantische Kourtaliotiko-Schlucht ist ein Gebirgseinschnitt im Süden der Insel Kreta zwischen den Bergen des westlich gelegenen Kouroupa und dem östlichen Xiro. Den Grund der Schlucht bildet das Bachbett des Megalopotamos oder auch Kourtaliotis, einem der zehn bis zum Meer ständig wasserführenden Fließgewässer auf Kreta. Der Fluss mündet beim traumhaften Palmenstrand von Preveli ins Meer.
Durch die Schlucht führt die Verbindungsstraße von Rethymno im Norden bis an die Südküste nach Plakias und Preveli. Sie wurde erst Anfang der 1960er-Jahre asphaltiert und ist eine der spektakulärsten Schluchtdurchfahrten Kretas. Die Felswände links und rechts ragen bis zu 250 Meter steil empor, wobei das Flussbett stellenweise noch über 100 Meter unter Straßenniveau liegt.
Es gibt einen bestimmten Punkt in der Nähe des Nordeingangs in der Schlucht, wo man „Händeklatschen“ hören kann. Diese „Claps“ sind die „Kourtala“, die der Schlucht ihren Namen geben. Sie sind die Folge davon, dass der Wind durch die hohen Höhlen der Schlucht geschleudert wird und die Schallmauer durchbricht.
In der Schlucht sitzt eine kleine Kirche „Agios Nikolaos“. Unweit davon tut sich rechts des Weges eine steile Klamm auf, aus deren Felswand unzählige wasserreiche Quellen entspringen und bis zu 40 Meter in die Tiefe stürzen – märchenhaft und verzaubernd – dieser Ort nimmt einen gefangen.
Durch den Steinbogen führen Treppen vorbei an der Kirche bis ganz hinunter. Die Schlucht ist von oben gesehen und auch ganz unten wahnsinnig beeindruckend.
