ROCK LODGE
The co-ordinates for GZ will take you near to the remains of a very unusual building!
This is Rock Lodge - a early 19th Century Gothic Folly and is part of the Taymouth Castle Estate. In it’s prime, it must have been a fantastic building - arched windows, circular tower and rustic masonary with projecting stones. The building has, unfortunately, been left to ruin now.
It is rumoured that Rock Lodge was built as a home for the Chinese concubine of the Marquess of Breadalbane - a lady who was brought back from one of the Marquess’s trips to the Far East! Lady Campbell wasn’t too impressed and would not have her stay in the castle.
There are many references around the Taymouth estate that have a Chinese flavour. The Chinese Bridge across the Tay (built so that the Marquess did not have to travel all the way to the village and back to cross the river, to visit Rock Lodge). There were also the Chinese Gardens, and the Ballroom in the Castle is known as the Chinese Room because of the silk tapestries and paintings on the ceilings.
