The BNSF Parkwater facility, formerly known as Yardley, has operated as a railyard for nearly 100 years. Originally built by the Northern Pacific Railroad, operations continue today and include fueling, intermodal operations, and switching of rail cars. The tracks below are part of the BNSF funnel, one of the busiest mainlines in the country seeing 50+ trains a day. Known as the funnel because the all the northern transcontinental main lines combine into one mainline on this 71 mile stretch from Spokane to Sandpoint.
When you come to visit this cache, be sure to use the pedestrian bridge over the tracks via the trail markers. If you come at the right time you will see trains switching tracks. Stop and watch a while.

To Find the Cache, you must walk (not a park and grab) to the the posted coordinates via one of the listed trail heads. This is a great observation point to view rail yard activity. Here you'll find a posted plaque on the pedestrian bridge to solve the following.

FINAL Cache Location: N 47° 40.ABC W 117° 21.DEF
A= How many words in the first 2 lines
B= Second digit in the year dedicated
C= How many digits in the contractor name +2
D= Add the digits of the year posted at the bottom together
E= How many letters are in Mark M____________ last name
F= Sixth digit of the west from the posted coordinates

Good Luck!

This cache is part of the 2018 Spokane Trains And Railroads GeoChallenge. Spokane has a strong history as a major train hub, and in many ways still is. The STAR Challenge will take geocachers on an adventure, finding caches in places significant to railroads past and present. You will visit locations featuring retired train cars, streetcar rails, bridges, graves and rail yards. Successful completion of the STAR Challenge is rewarded with a trackable Geocoin.
  • All caches begin with the series name STAR: followed by a location-specific name so they are easy to search. We also made a STAR Bookmark of the caches.
  • To qualify for a Geocoin, find the code word or stamp in each geocache and record it on your passport.
  • Visit STAR Challenge and get started today.
to find the challenge rules, a printable STAR Passport and map view of qualifying caches.

The Spokane Trains And Railroads GeoChallenge is sponsored by Cache Advance, and by donation from local cachers. We hope you enjoy!
